It was a one, two for Tim Griffiths and Dan Salter at the Southern England Karate Open on Sunday. The duo took home gold and silver between them in an all-Bristol Karate Academy final of Male +35 Kata at the University of Kent Sports Centre in Canterbury.

The event, which has been growing year-on-year, saw competitors from across the south of England challenge for honours in what was a well-organised championship run by SKA England, with some of the most experienced officials in the country in attendance.

The final of the +35 Kata saw Tim compete with Gojushiho Dai and Dan performing of Sochin, on a tatami where the officials were headed by World Karate Federation qualified referee and judge, Sensei Peter Bibby. It was Tim that took the gold, with Dan’s strong performance well-deserving of a silver medal. This was Dan’s second +35 Kata medal in his last two events.

With only two competitors from Bristol Karate Academy at the championship, it was fantastic to come home with two medals. We hope to encourage other competitors to take part at next year’s event but also at other competitions throughout the year.

While there are other tournaments available for those interested, the next event that the club will be sending a squad to is the Central England Open on Sunday 9th July. If you’d like to take part then keep an eye out for details of how to enter very soon.
