Congratulations to Jim Mateer for successfully passing his refereeing qualification in Chesterfield on Sunday. Jim is the first member of the Academy to qualify as a referee since Bristol Karate Academy's first dojo opened way back in 1978.

Jim first qualified as a judge in October 2016 and since then has officiated at numerous events up and down the country, most recently the KUGB Nationals Championships in Leicester.  On Sunday he converted his judging qualification to be officially confirmed as a fully qualified referee, after sucessfully passing both his theory and practical examinations.

On passing the assessments, Jim said, "I would like to thank those that have added their instruction, including Senseis Rob Welsh, Ron Hicks, Richard Poole and Trevor Jarrett. Not to mention - of course - Senseis Andy Sherry and Bob Poynton."

We're proud of Jim's achievement and look forward to seeing him in action at future tournaments, including the upcoming KUGB Southern Region Championships in Crawley next month.
