A heartfelt congratulations to Sensei Dan Salter, who passed his 4th Dan (yondan) grading examination in Nottingham on Sunday.

Dan Sensei is only the third member in the Academy’s 46 year history to reach this level, demonstrating what an exceptional achievement it is to reach ‘yondan’.

Since passing his 3rd Dan in 2019, Dan Sensei has continued to push for excellence. In 2024 alone he has picked up medals at the BKF British Championships, the EKF English Veteran Championships, the Murayama Cup, The Southern England Championships and the Central England Open. In the last 12 months he’s also been JKS England national team kata champion and an international team kata medallist at the Basel Open in Switzerland.

Dan Sensei took his exam under a senior JKS panel featuring Sensei Matt Price (7th Dan), Sensei Geoff Dixon (6th Dan) and the Head of JKS England, Sensei Alan Campbell (8th Dan). To pass his grading he was required to demonstrate a good understanding and performance of both kata and kumite. And after his two fights were complete on Sunday, Alan Sensei gave the words that Dan Sensei had been hoping for: “pass yondan!”

Dan Sensei – who leads the Bushido Warriors programme and is a core instructor at Westbury-on-Trym – is an integral part of the Bristol Karate Academy team. We’re very proud of him and his achievement and look forward to him continuing to go from strength to strength as both a student of karate and a sensei.

Sensei literally translates as “one who has come before”. Dan Sensei has trodden the karate path and is in the best possible position to help others towards their goals.

Please join us in recognising this great achievement!
